We have so many opinions about our own voices; we cringe hearing ourselves on voicemails, we hesitate to sing Happy Birthday, and even our shameless rendition of "Free Fallin'" on the freeway can trigger loud self-criticism. Even as professional singers we struggle with our identity around our voices, battling our brain's hyper-critical analysis of every phrase, every onset, every rehearsal.
The voice is so intimate and so personal – it quite literally comes from within us -- no wonder we have so much fear, anxiety and identity attached to it. One-on-one sessions in Vocal Mindfulness offer a rare opportunity to investigate our relationship with the self through the portal of the voice and vocal meditation. Within these sessions you will be guided through meditation, breath work, listening exercises and varying degrees of vocal exercises, all matched to your personal skill level and goals. By exploring your own experience of your voice (your reactions, your opinions), you can begin to expose and re-frame your relationship to yourself. Over time, the meditative skills of present-time awareness (mindfulness) cultivated in these sessions will foster equanimity and compassion, allowing for a sweeter, kinder relationship to music and singing, and to the self as a whole.
Whether your interest is in softening your self-judgment and critical voice, connecting to your body, or simply expanding your musicianship and vocalism, one-on-one sessions are an excellent opportunity to enrich your personal practice and musical development.
